I’m David, a New York–based writer/director, filmmaker, and photographer. Raised in cinemas, Blockbuster, and my dad’s old 1-hour photo store, I’ve long been drawn to the emotional and visual language of images. I make character-driven films rooted in observation, atmosphere, and emotional realism, often drawn to the quiet moments and human details that can easily go unnoticed.

My work blends cinematic storytelling with documentary sensibilities, shaped by a background in photography and a sensitivity to rhythm, pacing, and environment. Influenced by street photography and everyday observation, I’m often interested in stories that feel ‘discovered’ rather than manufactured, grounded in emotional subtext, naturalism, and a strong sense of place. Whether directing narrative films, branded documentaries, or portrait-driven work centered around people and culture, I aim to create films and images that feel immersive, intimate, and emotionally resonant.

Over the past fifteen years, I’ve developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning directing, cinematography, and photography. Rather than treating them as separate disciplines, I see each as informing the way I approach storytelling; from composition and atmosphere to rhythm, silence, and emotional framing. Photography, in particular, continues to shape and sharpen the way I observe people and spaces, drawing my attention to light, texture, gesture, and design.

I’m especially drawn to ordinary moments and slice-of-life details that reveal something quietly human — the unnoticed dignity of people moving through everyday life, moments of solitude within crowded spaces, or fleeting expressions that often pass by unseen.

Outside of filmmaking, I’m usually wandering with a camera, listening to music, searching for good sushi, or a great bagel, or thinking about why Japanese toast with jam is the best thing since…well, since sliced Japanese bread (shokupan).

A curated playlist that inspires my process.

Introspective, cinematic, and human. It carries moments of quiet contemplation, nostalgic lift, and emotional peaks — the same qualities and tones I seek when crafting stories. Enjoy the tracks individually or the list as a whole. I’ve ordered the list in an arc as insight to my process.
